A Cockatoo Truth

The Rocky Road. Something we as companion parrot flock members may not talk about, but probably should more often. There will be days we struggle. We're only human and they are only exotic parrots. Because the basic truth that a parrot will act like a parrot first dictates those moments. Some struggles are small, some are large, and some are plain disheartening at times. I appreciate Valerie's candor in this story. It's okay to have a bad day. Because you can make a great day tomorrow.

Basic Parrot Needs

All parrots, in all sizes have a set of basic requirements. Basics alone can be impressive and important to understand. Basically companion parrots are amazing, challenging and incredibly loving. Their needs and requirements are basic and challenging.

The Need for Quarantine

Quarantining is standard practice inside the rescue and sanctuary world. It is an effective tool in transitioning a new parrot into the environment as well as protecting all concerned from unknown illnesses.

Choosing the Right Parrot

Choosing the right companion parrot starts with being honest with yourself. Do not romanticize who you are or what you will be with a certain bird in your home. Do not plan on changing things or yourself to accommodate an exotic companion parrot. This results in failure more often than not. Know thyself, and armed with the truth of your lifestyle, yourself and how you prefer to spend your time will lead you to the perfect companion to share your world.

Adopt Don't Shop

There are a few accepted myths about rescue companion parrots. Myths that have effectively thrown an incorrect light on the truth of adoption. Rescue parrots adopted through a reputable rescue organization bring with them history, health, information, vet history and a backup team at the rescue if you have questions.
